Phenomenal. Still needs to beat Maru to claim the #1 spot.
Could he have beaten Maru based on this performance? Probably. Then again, he never faced anyone remotely close to Maru.
Maru epitomizes victory from the jaws of defeat. His central defininig characteristic is his persistence and the ability to adapt. It's what allowed him to play at a high level since the beginning -- the very first GSL -- and not disappear off the radar like the rest of the players once their styles were solved.
Until he beats Maru, Serral is "merely" the best(*) in the world... with an asterisk. ;)

He absolutely destroyed maru in their team match at GSL vs the World.
It was only a best of 1, sure, but he showed a complete understanding of how to deny maru's aggressive tendencies and kept him to a single corner of the map for the entire mid to late game. Which is unheard of.
Stylistically speaking, I think its safe to say he would have had an easier time vs maru than he did vs stats.

definitely the best in the world, that's zerg. but then again, stats' start "if it didn't work the first time, try it again, and if that didn't work, try it again and..." isn't very good.
until terran and protoss unite, we'll constantly live under the stiletto heel of that b1tch kerrigan.

Man, everyone hating on Zerg ;) who cares what race Serral plays, he is a god! His mechanics, his game sense, his unit control is one another level.
All I can say is it's a breath of fresh air to see a non-Korean take the top spot.
Congrats Serral

who cares? let me think... all the inhabitants on Chau Sara, Tarsonis, Mara Sara, Antiga Prime, Aiur, Shakuras, Braxis, and Sorona would probably disagree... oh wait they can't BECAUSE THEY ARE DEAD AT THE MURDEROUS HANDS OF THAT TREACHEROUS B1TCH. Get it? The zerg destroyed well over 100 planets. And if that's a but too far off for you think of all your friends, or uh... your children's friends or maybe their kids i dunno... BUT people RIGHT HERE ON EARTH suffered grievous losses when she (somewhat too easily) manipulated that stupid codger DuGalle.
So don't give me that whole "what's wrong with the zerg." You sound like your infested, for Amon's sake.

Yeah he would beat Maru. He beat him in GSL vs. World. And while Maru has been pretty dominant in Korea, I'd still argue Stats is more or less on a similar level of Maru. He makes just as many finals as Maru, but there can only be one tourney winner so just doesn't have as many first place finishes.
Then again, on the flip side, I also wouldn't be surprised if either Stats or Maru takes down Serral in another best of 7. Serral's dominance is a bit inflated due to the region he plays in. If, for example, he was a regular player in Korea and in the GSL, he would be taking many more losses overall.
All that aside, congrats to Serral though. This is an achievement that quite likely won't be topped ever, unless perhaps by Serral himself again. Truly, a once in a life time achievement.

Nice, wish I had been at a Barcraft for this one :)
It's really awesome to watch Serral play, he has such an intuitive and deep understanding of the game at all levels: strategical, tactical, mechanical, and resource/attention management. He knows when to engage and when to back off, and how to prioritize between economy, tech and army.
Truly a great champion, and already one of the best players of all time. Serral won literally every tournament he participated in in 2018, which is unprecedented. And I honestly see no immediate end to his reign of dominance either. If he keeps this up throughout 2019, I see no way around calling him the Greatest Of All Time.
