A lot of ppl like to rag on Valdez for being a play-by-play caster, but no one can deny he speaks calmly and confidently. Very well done by Valdez, one of the three best casters in the industry. Wolf and Moonglade being the other two, obviously <3 Proleague.
I'm glad Dark did really well in this game, since most Zergs fail miserably in these scenarios. I hope this guy finds some more success in individual leagues so the world recognizes him as one of the best Zergs, which he most definitely is.
there's nothing wrong with being a commentator more than a caster. i also think he did excellent, and you can tell how much better he has gotten from say last year or even early this year.
@Matthew Well said...
That engagement at 22:00 in Game Three! Be still my heart.
Every good casting team needs a play-by-play guy and a special comments guy and while the play-by-play casters probably could due with some more credit I have to strongly disagree with putting Valdez in the top 3.
For a start he suffers from the Rivkin disease of calling plays he doesn't understand mistakes. I vividly remember watching a Protoss trying to set a forcefield trap and draw an army into with it blink stalkers and the whole time he's just riffing on how bad the blinks are, how they're not doing enough damage, etc. Anyone observing someone more talented than them should keep in the mind the possibility they're seeing something they don't understand and he fails at this repeatedly.
Also he just doesn't fully engage with his fellow casters, his ability to pick up on a joke and run with it is probably weakest of any caster in the industry. The polar opposite of this is Tasteless. Until the 3rd expansion comes out filling in the dead space at the start of each games with amusing banter will remain one of the most important and underrated parts of sc2 casting and it's a big part of why I reflexively click on anything by Tastetosis but won't go near a Valdez cast until it makes the top 5.
Well, I was only half-serious. I just like Proleague more than any other pro-level SC2 content, and wasn't actually trying to rank anyone.
I do really like how all three actually talk about Starcraft though. I understand Tastetosis has a history with the game and a lot of fans, but IMO they go overboard. It is 15 min. talking about random whatever, then 30 seconds of "look at those beautiful forcefields" or "look at that concave" and then the game ends. I doubt it is actually the case, but it gives off the impression that they (well, mostly Tasteless) isn't all that interested in the game or even casting. I'm not watching to listen to Tastetosis ramble about whatever, I'm watching for Starcraft. It is a big part of the reason why I avoid anything Tastetosis unless I am starving for SC2 content.
To be clear I don't mean any hostility here, just explaining my alternate view :)
Well there's no accounting for taste (or Tasteless) I guess. :p
I suspect I'm in the minority in preferring the shenanigans of Tastetosis to other casting archons but it depends what you're watching for I guess. When I started I was watching to learn more about sc2 and improve my game but after hearing just about every casting clich
