In response to Artosis's question: My vote goes to the marine. No other unit in all three iterations of the game and just about every meta has been able to accomplish so much for a mere 50 minerals and zero gas. In most metas that unit alone has forced P and Z into specific compositions. If P didn't hard tech up to storm or colossus fast enough, gg. If Z didn't carefully engage with just the right amount of banelings at just the right angle, gg. The marine alone dictated the course of the game.
It is a unit you can almost never go wrong with massing. You had players like Polt who just made marines and more marines and did extremely well in tournaments with it. Yeah chargelots and lings are somewhat similar, but both get hard-countered far easier than marines, hence why players like Polt could make 50 mineral units all game long against all compositions and still make it work. Even when it wasn't "supposed" to work.
It is only until somewhat recently with the addition of the adept and higher armor ultralisks where the marine has finally fallen in power a tad bit. Even so, I find it difficult to argue against the marine being one of the most powerful units throughout the life of SC2.

Early LotV adepts. I'm not even going to bother explaining why.

I agree with Marines, especially if the player has really good micro. They can easily get more than their worth.

Since you guys are talking about marines...
A marine walks into a bar and asks the bartender, where is the counter?
