commentators aren't really talking about the base count and econ reynor is building up in game 1. The low tech battles holding on are buying time for his eco and tech to kick into gear. Counterattacks succeeding to keep Terran econ down is helping with that too.
He didn't do the massive base-taking (5th and 4th simultaneous) in subsequent games. Doing so allows zerg to hold out and buy time while not losing econ. If the 4th goes down there would just be another hatch up for the drones to just continue mining without too much down time.
I say that's why Reynor won game 1 and lost the others.
